SUNY Binghamton Scholar Awarded Sr. Joanna Monticello Memorial Scholarship – WICZ

Sarah Richer, this year’s recipient, will graduate from Binghamton University in May later this year with a Master’s Degree in Social Work. In her application for the scholarship, Richer wrote about her experiences while caring for a patient who was living in a comfort care home for the terminally ill as part of her senior year field fellowship. Richer began spending time with the patient watching TV, talking, listening to music, and learning how to make the perfect grilled cheese. As the patient’s condition worsened, conversations became more serious discussing the patient’s condition, physical and emotional feelings, and family. Richer notes that she has learned various valuable skills from establishing relationships and having meaningful conversations to being comfortable with silence.
